NICU
Newborn babies who need special medical care are placed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The NICU has advanced equipment and trained doctors and nurses to care for them. Some areas in the NICU also care for babies who are not very sick but still need special attention.
Most babies in the NICU are born early (before 37 weeks), have low birth weight (under 5.5 pounds), or need special medical care. Twins, triplets, and other multiples are often in the NICU because they are usually born smaller and earlier than single babies. Babies with breathing problems, heart issues, infections, or birth defects also receive care in the NICU.
